The other day, Dave and I went out for a quick run to the store for something we had forgotten on the last trip. It was 8pm and the most gorgeous day imaginable. We had both been stuck inside all day, working on putting together our new place. Dave says, "Man, if we would have known it was such a nice day, we could have headed up to Girdwood...actually, it's pretty close, wanna go?"
If we lived anywhere else this impromptu adventure wouldn't have happened, at least not that night. But in Alaska in the summer you can do things like head out at 8pm and know that you still have plenty of sunlight. It's just that awesome.
I'm so happy we were able to take this quick little trip up the coast, it was simply breathtaking. If you find yourself in Alaska, I highly recommend this drive from Anchorage to Girdwood. And make sure you take a road or two up the mountains, you won't regret it.
And yes, those are turkeys in some of the pictures above. We were driving back down a mountain and Dave slams on the breaks because there is a mama turkey and her babies crossing the road. Of course we had to stop so I could take some pictures, but I was a little bit frightened since the head of the clan was flaring his feathers at me and wasn't too happy about me taking pictures, especially of the babies. Anything for a picture, right?
